Travelling Songs, Rocket Ship Edition

Tomorrow I’m embarking on two months of absolute travelling madness that encompasses three continents, five countries, at least ten airports, and either two or four islands depending on how you view England and Ireland. This calls for a killer soundtrack. Here’s what’s on the iPod the night before leg one of the amazing journey.

  • Alice in Chains, Dirt
  • Alice in Chains, Facelift
  • Alvvays, s/t
  • The Beta Band, The Three EPs
  • Blur, Parklife
  • Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, 1978/08/09 Cleveland
  • Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, 2014/02/26 Brisbane (for you, Geoff!)
  • Cabaret, the new Broadway cast recording
  • The Clash, Hits Back
  • David Bowie, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
  • The Decemberists, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World
  • The Decemberists, The King is Dead (I’m finally seeing the Decemberists, July 19 in Calgary)
  • Devo, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!
  • Faith No More, Album of the Year
  • Faith No More, Angel Dust
  • Faith No More, King for a Day…Fool for a Lifetime (and how freaking excited am I for Sol Invictus, which comes out next Tuesday!)
  • Foo Fighters, Sonic Highways
  • The Gaslight Anthem, Handwritten
  • The Gaslight Anthem, The ’59 Sound
  • Green Day, American Idiot
  • Guns N’ Roses, Appetite for Destruction
  • The Hold Steady, Boys and Girls in America
  • The Hold Steady, Separation Sunday
  • The Hold Steady, Stay Positive
  • I Mother Earth, Blue Green Orange
  • I Mother Earth, Dig
  • I Mother Earth, Earth, Sky and Everything in Between
  • I Mother Earth, The Quicksilver Meat Dream
  • I Mother Earth, Scenery and Fish
  • Jack White, Blunderbuss
  • Jack White, Lazaretto
  • Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros, Streetcore
  • John Fogerty, 2014/11/24 Calgary
  • Manic Street Preachers, This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours
  • Massive Attack, Mezzanine
  • My Morning Jacket, Circuital
  • My Morning Jacket, Evil Urges
  • My Morning Jacket, The Waterfall (first impressions largely positive)
  • The New Pornographers, Brill Bruisters (there’s a very real chance this is never leaving my iPod; it’s certainly not going anywhere right before a Vancouver trip)
  • Nine Inch Nails, Hesitation Marks (this’ll sound great in an industrial Chinese city)
  • Nine Inch Nails, Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D (ditto)
  • Oasis, Definitely Maybe
  • Oasis, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?
  • Passengers, Original Soundtracks 1 (Passengers is actually U2 in disguise; this album’s brilliant, by the way)
  • Pulp, Different Class
  • Pulp, This is Hardcore (I have trouble travelling without these two albums; I associate This is Hardcore with Brasilia of all places)
  • The Rolling Stones, Sticky Fingers
  • Sleater-Kinney, No Cities to Love
  • Soundgarden, King Animal
  • The Tragically Hip, Day for Night
  • The Tragically Hip, Fully Completely
  • The Tragically Hip, Phantom Power
  • The Tragically Hip, Road Apples
  • U2, The Joshua Tree
  • U2, No Line on the Horizon (I was actually in Vancouver the week No Line was released in 2009 and still associate much of the album–the first two songs especially–with a memorable weekend involving J-1s and Alana and The Sound of Music and a weird late-night bus ride from New Westminster to Chinatown. It’s a long story.)
  • U2, Songs of Innocence
  • The Who, Quadrophenia (I’ve got a couple dates with Pete and Roger forthcoming)
  • The Who’s Tommy, original Broadway Cast Recording

In twelve hours I’ll be in Vancouver–and this time tomorrow Sam and I will be at opening night of the new U2 tour. I’m ready for what’s next!
