Travelling Songs, Middle East Edition

Today’s busy enough to warrant its own to-do list, the final three items of which are “kick ass,” “take names,” and “fly the Dreamliner to Heathrow,” which is actually what I’m doing at 8:15pm. This time tomorrow I’ll be in Salisbury; this time Thursday I’ll be somewhere between London and Dubai for the latest installment of Travelling Steve.

Here’s my Smashing Pumpkins-heavy playlist for the next three weeks.

  • Alvvays, s/t
  • Bob Dylan, Blonde on Blonde
  • Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, 1978/08/09 Cleveland, OH
  • Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, 2014/02/26 Brisbane, AU (Springsteen’s releasing official live recordings is a potentially lethal development in my efforts to be debt-free by my birthday)
  • The Clash, London Calling
  • David Bowie, Aladdin Sane
  • David Bowie, Diamond Dogs
  • David Bowie, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
  • The Decemberists, The Crane Wife
  • The Decemberists, The Hazards of Love
  • The Decemberists, The King is Dead (I’ll always associate The King is Dead with driving Highway 22 to Fernie the week of its release in January 2010; still haven’t heard the new Decemberists, by the way, which I’m sure will sound good in the Middle East but which I’m positive will sound better in rural Alberta)
  • The Decemberists, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World
  • Eddie Vedder, Into the Wild
  • Foo Fighters, Sonic Highways (still not totally sold on this one)
  • The Gaslight Anthem, Get Hurt
  • The Gaslight Anthem, The ’59 Sound
  • Green Day, American Idiot
  • Green Day, Dookie
  • Guns N’ Roses, Appetite for Destruction
  • The Hold Steady, Boys and Girls in America
  • The Hold Steady, Separation Sunday
  • The Hold Steady, Stay Positive
  • Jack White, Blunderbuss
  • Jack White, Lazaretto
  • John Fogerty, 11/24/14 Calgary, AB (hey, they finally released it!)
  • Lana Del Rey, Ultraviolence
  • Moist, Creature
  • Moist, Glory Under Dangerous Skies
  • The New Pornographers, Brill Bruisers (50/50 this album will never leave my iPod)
  • Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Push the Sky Away
  • Nine Inch Nails, Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D (which isn’t a Nine Inch Nails record, per se, but rather a remixed version of Year Zero; if you can find it, it’ll blow your mind)
  • The Rolling Stones, Exile on Main St.
  • The Rolling Stones, Let it Bleed
  • The Rolling Stones, Some Girls
  • The Rolling Stones, Sticky Fingers
  • Sleater-Kinney, No Cities to Love
  • Sleater-Kinney, The Woods
  • Smashing Pumpkins, Gish (deluxe edition)
  • Smashing Pumpkins, Machina II/the friends & enemies of modern music
  • Smashing Pumpkins, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
  • Smashing Pumpkins, Monuments to an Elegy (still not totally sold on this one, either; it’s early, but it’ll likely end up being my least-favourite Smashing Pumpkins record)
  • Smashing Pumpkins, Siamese Dream (deluxe edition; between these five albums I’ve got 121 Pumpkins song on my iPod this trip)
  • South Pacific, New Broadway Cast Recording
  • Taylor Swift, “Shake It Off” (which doubles as Sam’s ringtone. I make no apologies: this song rules.)
  • Tom Waits, Mule Variations
  • The Tragically Hip, Day for Night
  • The Tragically Hip, Fully Completely
  • The Tragically Hip, Phantom Power
  • U2, Songs of Innocence (becoming a bit more sold on Songs of Innocence, which of course is the album that nearly destroyed Western civilization last fall; I’m looking forward to hearing them live in May)
  • The Who’s Tommy, Original Cast Recording
  • The White Stripes, Elephant
  • The Who, Quadrophenia

It’s almost go time! Next time you hear from me I’ll either be in the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, or Jordan.
