Lemme cut to the chase: it’s the 2014 Stuff and Nonsense year in review! Have a safe and happy New Year’s, everyone; I’ll see you in 2015.

  1. Where did you begin 2014? Kissing some hottie in J-What, A-What, and C-What’s living room
  2. What was your status by Valentine’s Day? Dating said hottie
  3. Were you in school (anytime this year)? As a student? No. As part of my job? Yes.
  4. How did you earn your money? Doing international student recruitment
  5. Did you have to go to the hospital? LOL
  6. Did you have any encounters with the police? Not knowingly, no.
  7. Where did you go on holidays? England and France (March); the B.C. Rockies (May); Vancouver, Vancouver Island, and Seattle (July); New York City (December); and Toronto on numerous occasions
  8. What did you purchase that was over $1,000? A plane ticket to Europe
  9. Have you kissed anyone this year? I even started the year kissing someone!
  10. Did you know anybody who passed away? Yup
  11. Did you move anywhere? Nope
  12. What concerts/shows/sporting events did you go to? Concerts: Neil Young (with Diana Krall), The National, Black Sabbath, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds (which was phenomenal), Queens of the Stone Age, Arcade Fire, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers (with Steve Winwood, who was arguably better than the headliner), the Tragically Hip, Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, Moist, and the Hold Steady (which was the last and best concert I saw in 2014); shows, Matilda, The Phantom of the Opera, The Last Confession, The Lion King, Much Ado About Nothing, King Lear, and the revived Studio 54 production of Cabaret (with Alan Cumming and Emma Stone) that was one of the best things I’ve ever seen; sporting events, NHL games in Toronto and Calgary, MLB games in Toronto and Seattle, CFL and CIS football games in Calgary, and Premier League matches in Southampton and Manchester

  14. What was the biggest change in your life? Growing into a long-distance relationship
  15. Where do you live now? Calgary
  16. Describe your birthday? I went to my friends’ wedding; before and after that I watched Manchester United (a 2-1 loss to Swansea in Louis Van Gaal’s first official game in charge) and the Minnesota Vikings (a preseason game which was apparently against the Arizona Cardinals), which was pretty perfect.
  17. What has been your favorite moment? Alan Cumming slinking onto the stage at Studio 54
  18. What’s something you learned about yourself? I’m a survivor
  19. Any new additions to your family? None this year, but there’ll be at least two in 2015
  20. What was your best month? December, in spite of a few hiccups, has been pretty great actually
  21. What music will you remember 2014 by? Brill Bruisers by the New Pornographers
  22. Who has been your best drinking buddy? It’ll be you forever, J-What
  23. Made new friends? Lots: it’s an occupational hazard
  24. New best friend? No
  25. Favorite night out? Mine and Sam’s two-person craft beer pub crawl and sushi dinner in Vancouver
  26. What did you do in 2014 that you’d never done before? Went to Asia
  27. Did you keep your New Year’s Resolutions, and will you make more for next year? Last year my “resolution” (such as it was) was to write more, which was an abject failure. But typically I don’t make New Year’s Resolutions; instead I make a goal list on my birthday, and this year’s goals are ongoing.
  28. Did anyone close to you give birth? A better question would be, “Did anyone close to me not give birth?” To which my answer would be, “No.”
  29. What countries did you visit? In chronological order: England, France, the United States, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates, along with a couple stopovers in Germany
  30. What would you like to have in 2015 that you lacked in 2014? Two functioning knees
  31. What date from 2014 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? March 23, when Sam and I climbed the Eiffel Tower to celebrate my thirty-year cancerversary
  32. What was your biggest achievement of the year? Going off antidepressants and getting back on the international recruitment circuit. September and October were big months for me.
  33. What was your biggest failure? Not becoming a writer, as per my 2014 New Year’s Resolution
  34. Did you suffer illness or injury? LOL
  35. What was the best thing you bought? High tea at the Burj Al Arab
  36. Whose behavior merited celebration? My old roommate Mike, who helped consign the Alberta government’s discriminatory Bill 10 to legislative purgatory.
  37. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? Rob and Doug Ford
  38. Where did most of your money go? Rent
  39. What did you get really, really, really excited about? The World Cup
  40. Compared to this time last year, are you: a, more happy or more sad? About the same. b, thinner or fatter? Thinner! (see #32a) c, richer or poorer? Ever-so-slightly richer
  41. What do you wish you’d done more of? Skiing and soccer
  42. What do you wish you’d done less of? Rehabbing
  43. How will you be spending Christmas? I spent Christmas (past tense–it’s December 30) at mine and Sam’s parents’ houses
  44. What was the most embarrassing thing that happened to you in 2014? Being abandoned on Mount Nebo
  45. Did you fall in love in 2014? I’m not a tool!
  46. How many one-night stands? One on each side of the bed. Why?
  47. What was your favorite TV program? House of Cards
  48. What was the best book you read? Brilliant Orange: The Neurotic Genius of Football
  49. What was your greatest musical discovery? Nick Cave
  50. What did you want and get? These bad boys
  51. What did you want and not get? The mooted touring version of the Stratford production of Tommy
  52. What was your favorite film of this year? The Grand Budapest Hotel
  53. On your birthday, how old were you? 34. Still am.
  54. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? Functioning knees
  55. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2014? Maturing
  56. What kept you sane? Cipralex, up until about October 2; after that it was sheer dogged perseverance and Sam’s undying love. Does that answer your question?
  57. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? I’m…not sure I fancied one?
  58. What political issue stirred you the most? Toronto’s mayoral election
  59. Who do you miss? Jon, Lindsay, Isla, and Sadie
  60. Who was the best new person you met? Does Sam count? I know we met in 2012 and reconnected and started dating in 2013–but I feel as though I spent 2014 meeting her on virtually a daily basis. And that was pretty awesome.
  61. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2014. I’m just around the corner to the light of day.
