Shaking Down 2012

2013’s off to a promising start…and yeah, I know it’s only January 2, but after the year I just had I’ll take anything I can get. But 2012 wasn’t all bad. Here are the highlights, arranged in the same this-used-to-be-a-chain-email format I’ve been using for years.

  1. Where did you begin 2012? Third-wheeling at the (pre-C-What) J-What/A-What apartment
  2. What was your status by Valentine’s Day? Single
  3. Were you in school (anytime this year)? Yup: I’m currently taking Into Psyc through Athabasca University (and I’m about to apply for my first extension)
  4. How did you earn your money? As a student recruitment officer
  5. Did you have to go to the hospital? Yup
  6. Did you have any encounters with the police? Does a ride program count?
  7. Where did you go on holidays? Rio de Janeiro, Washington, Atlanta, and Toronto on numerous occasions
  8. What did you purchase that was over $1,000? Nothing
  9. Have you kissed anyone this year? A gentleman, etc.
  10. Did you know anybody who passed away? Unfortunately yes
  11. Did you move anywhere? In May Small n’ Bald, Tall n’ Blonde, and I were evicted from our house, and in the ensuing chaos (we were given less than a month’s notice) I signed a lease on a one-bedroom apartment near the university. So yeah: I moved there.
  12. What concerts/shows/sporting events did you go to? Concerts: Bruce Springsteen four times, City and Colour, the Black Keys (with the Arctic Monkeys), the Tragically Hip, I Mother Earth, the Smashing Pumpkins, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Leonard Cohen, the Who, the Gaslight Anthem (with the Joy Formidable), Lowest of the Low, and…GWAR (and Psy, if you count his halftime performance at the Bills/Seahawks game in Toronto); shows, 2 Pianos 4 Hands, Enron, Cats (Theatre Calgary), Sweeney Todd, Jersey Boys, The Pirates of Penzance (Stratford Festival), The Crucible (Soulpepper), War Horse, and presumably others I’ve forgotten; sporting events, hockey games in Toronto (2), NFL games in Buffalo and Toronto, a CIS football game in Kingston, and upwards of twenty-five baseball games in Toronto, Baltimore, and Atlanta

  15. Where do you live now? Calgary, although I also spent an inordinate amount of time in Toronto this year
  16. Describe your birthday? I don’t remember much about it, to be honest (and no, it’s not because I was drunk–I didn’t drink on my birthday this year), but it ended with a Blue Jays game with J-What, A-What, Flaming Red, Pocahontas, and my entire family.
  17. What has been your favorite moment? Blair Walsh’s game-winning field goal against the Packers last Sunday
  18. What’s something you learned about yourself? I’m stronger than I’ve ever given myself credit for.
  19. Any new additions to your family? One official one (welcome on board, Greg!)
  20. What was your best month? October

  27. Did you keep your New Year’s Resolutions, and will you make more for next year? No, since I didn’t make any, and no, since I don’t make any.
  28. Did anyone close to you give birth? Brothers from different mothers and sisters from different misters keep pumping out babies like the sausage factory scene in The Wall, and I don’t foresee that changing anytime soon–although if I ruled the world I’d impose sterilization on at least some of my friends in order to safeguard the rest of us from their offspring. Like HLP Paul, for instance–and he’s due again in a few months.
  29. What countries did you visit? Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and the United States.
