Greetings from Quito, where the weather report’s about as uplifting as a Joy Division song. I seldom buy anything when I travel–books and Texas Longhorns swag at GEORGE BUSH INTERCONTINENTAL AIRPORT notwithstanding–but yesterday at the El Ejido Park market found something I simply couldn’t resist: this reproduction of a panel from “Age of Anger” by the great Ecuadorian artist Oswaldo Guayasamín.
If you’re ever in Quito, Guayasamín’s Chapel of Man is a must-see. I need to learn more about Guayasamín and his work and how they both dovetail with Latin American art history; it’s so stark and so moving it demands further attention. In the meantime, I’ll have to figure out where I’m hanging this when I get back to Calgary next Wednesday.
