PJ20: The Setlists

This was a special weekend in rural Wisconsin, a chance for me, Sherkin, Pearl Jam Heather, and 30,000 others just like us to reaffirm our love for our favourite band. I’ve slept twelve hours since Friday morning; I’m also sick, so I’m just posting Pearl Jam’s setlists for the time being (and get a load of night one!). Bold denotes songs I’d never heard live before. And there were lots of those.

Saturday

Set:

  • Release (this was stunning; it would’ve been the highlight of the entire weekend if not for…well, read on)
  • Arms Aloft [Joe Strummer & the Mescalaros]
  • Do the Evolution
  • Got Some
  • In My Tree (“album version”)
  • Faithfull
  • Who You Are
  • Push Me Pull Me
  • Setting Forth [Eddie Vedder] (this song’s from the Into the Wild soundtrack; Pearl Jam had never played it before Saturday)
  • Not for You (with Julian Casablancas)
  • In the Moonlight (with Josh Homme). I think this was the song’s live debut.
  • Deep
  • Help Help (!)
  • Breath (!!!)
  • Education (with Liam Finn)
  • Once
  • State of Love and Trust (with Dhani Harrison–yup, that’s George’s son–on guitar)
  • Better Man
    • Save it for Later [The English Beat] (this was the best version of “Better Man” I’ve heard; Mike McCready owned this song, which isn’t something you’d typically say about “Better Man”)
  • Wasted Reprise
    • Life Wasted

1st Encore:

  • Rearviewmirror

Then came The Moment: Eddie welcomed Chris Cornell to the stage. What ensued was…well, check it out:

  • STARDOG CHAMPION [Mother Love Bone] (with Chris Cornell on vocals). This was the highlight of the weekend…and that’s including what happened next.
  • SAY HELLO 2 HEAVEN [Temple of the Dog]
  • REACH DOWN [Temple of the Dog]
  • HUNGER STRIKE [Temple of the Dog]. There are no words. Moving on.
  • LOVE REIGN O’ER ME [The Who] (how’s that for a follow-up?!)
  • Porch

2nd Encore:

  • Kick Out The Jams [The MC5] (with Mark Arm and Steve Turner)

Again, that was night one. There was still another night to go.

Sunday

Set:

  • Wash (!)
  • The Fixer
  • Severed Hand
  • All Night
  • Given to Fly (this song should absolutely be played at every Pearl Jam concert)
  • Pilate
  • Love Boat Captain
  • Habit (with Liam Finn) (Three words. The first is Matt; the third is Cameron; the second’s a swear word.)
  • Even Flow
  • Daughter
    • It’s OK [Dead Moon]
  • Leatherman
  • Red Mosquito (with Julian Casablancas)
  • Satan’s Bed (I’d heard this before, at the legendary State College show back in 2003, but this was my first time hearing it done “properly”)
  • Small Town
  • Unthought Known
  • A New World [X] (with John Doe!)
  • Black
  • Jeremy

1st Encore:

  • new song (which Eddie claimed to have written earlier in the day; it was nice, albeit brief)
  • Just Breathe
  • Nothingman
  • No Way
  • Public Image [Public Image Limited]
  • Smile (with Glen Hansard)
  • Spin the Black Circle (which ended with Mike McCready, for no apparent reason, running five laps around the stage)

2nd Encore, and here we go again:

  • HUNGER STRIKE [Temple of the Dog]
  • CALL ME A DOG [Temple of the Dog]
  • ALL NIGHT THING [Temple of The Dog] (sidenote: are you kidding me?????)
  • REACH DOWN [Temple of the Dog]
  • Sonic Reducer [Dead Boys] (with Mark Arm and Steve Turner)

3rd Encore (Pearl Jam bumped the rest of the day’s performers up by half-an-hour so they could play even longer…and you wonder why we love this band so much?):

  • Alive
  • Rockin’ in the Free World [Neil Young] (with all the other performers, minus Queens of the Stone Age, joining Pearl Jam on stage)
  • Yellow Ledbetter
    • The Star-Spangled Banner

Like I said: this was a special weekend.
