I caved: tonight at midnight I’m off to Milwaukee and Pearl Jam’s twentieth anniversary destination festival at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin. As of Monday I wasn’t going; twenty-four hours later I was, and for the grand total of less than $400. No, seriously: $400 for everything, including flights, accommodation, rental car, and tickets to two nights of Pearl Jam, the Strokes, Queens of the Stone Age, Mudhoney, John Doe, Glen Hansard, and Liam Finn…among others. It’s shaping up to be a memorable weekend, and that’s before mentioning that legions of Pearl Jam fans will be descending on East Troy for the occasion. I can’t even pretend to know what we’ll hear over the course of the two nights–but “Crown of Thorns,” the Mother Love Bone song that Pearl Jam occasionally covers, is probably a given, and that would be special.
I’ll hazard a guess that “Long Road” will open tomorrow night–which, again, would be pretty special, not to mention topical (“All the friends and family, all the memories rolling ’round, ’round, ’round”). Dispatches from Wisconsin to follow! I’ve got a redeye to catch.
