This, as far as I’m concerned, is an invitation to start regularly blogging about hockey, and what better place to start than at the Olympic Canadian Airlines Pengrowth Scotiabank Saddledome and tonight’s debacle involving the Leafs and the Flames?
Firstly, you won’t find many sour grapes here: the Leafs were awful, absolutely awful, and if anything the final score flattered them. It’s incredible watching professionals botch basic skills–making crisp passes out of their own end, for instance–you’d expect Peewee players to execute. I’m not about to use one single game to write off an entire team, but tonight, unless your name’s Grabovski, Versteeg, or Kulemin, you sucked. Secondly, the crowd was as bad as any I’ve been a part of. There was an edge inside the Saddledome the entire night; good-natured banter I can handle, but when it turns nasty (or, as was the case tonight, homophobic) it’s another matter. And it wasn’t just Flames fan: after all, it takes two to tango, and as much as I love the Leafs there are times when being part of “Leafs Nation” is borderline intolerable. I don’t get it. It’s hockey, for chrissake. You aren’t a better person just because the team you arbitrarily chose to root for is beating another team–but thinking you are might make you a lesser person. Ironic, isn’t it?
Thirdly, see you next Monday at the Air Canada Centre.
