Honouring a Canadian Legend

I almost forgot: yesterday in Fort McMurray, I visited the alma mater of one Chris Phillips, erstwhile star defenseman of the Ottawa Senators who has the singular distinction of being the most recent National Hockey League player to score a Stanley Cup winning goal. Unfortunately for Phillips, he scored it for the wrong team: his comical own goal against Ray Emery (his own goalie!) in Game 5 of last year’s Stanley Cup Final effectively gifted the series to the Anaheim Ducks. Sadly, this fact isn’t mentioned on Phillips’ laudation in the school lobby. It really should be.

But give Phillips credit: as he’s demonstrated, he’s going from strength to strength this season. In Ottawa’s opening game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Phillips directed a cross-ice pass from Nik Antropov into his own net. It might not carry the same implications as his gaffe last June, but it’s clear that Chris Phillips is on his game already in 2007/08.
