Who knew that this man–he’s Baltimore Orioles’ third baseman Melvin Mora, in case you didn’t recognize him–is the coolest athlete in professional sports? I certainly didn’t…until tonight. And since a blog is, like, the worst possible forum for explaining what he did tonight that makes him such a legend, I’ll cop out with a simple, “You had to be there.” Next time you see me, ask me to tell you the story; no electronic medium could possibly convey the ridiculousness of it all.
I will say this: if you’re a professional baseball player, and you’ve got an entire section heckling your every move, and you come up to bat in the top of the 7th inning of a tie game with the bases loaded, and you hit a three-run double which proves to be the game-winning hit…I mean, don’t you owe it to the people who’ve been heckling you to stare at them and then drop a “sit down!” gesture with your hands? Isn’t that your legal right? Wouldn’t it be wrong for you not to do it? The answers: yes, of course and absolutely…which is why we should be grateful Melvin Mora is who he is.
